As a means of registering my time in the lovely Crescent City, I am starting a weekly segment entitled: "E's Week in Review. A Look at the Staggering Depth One Man Has to Go to Affect Change in a City" The title is understandably still needs work. Without further ado, here we go:
-Hey folks, welcome to E's Week in a Review, a look at one man's struggle to remain unemployed as long as possible. This isn't the story of a single individual, this is the story of a society on the brink, a society ready to tumble head first off the canyon edge into the pit that is chaos, a story of struggle against just caving in and taking that job in the Whole Foods produce department. This is a story for us all. And that story begins on Monday:
Monday
Trying to think here what happened on Monday... Give it a second but first and foremost, I have somehow been 'talked' into driving my girlfriend to her morning classes during the week. Now, I'm not sure how many of you have spent serious periods wading through the swamp that is unemployment, but one of the many (and there are many) benefits is the pleasure of sleeping in. Needless to say this little arrangement needs to be looked at in the future, pick up in the afternoon post-class? Sure, no problem. I'm probably up by then. Drop-off pre-9 am? C'mon people, we know that isnt right.
Tuesday
Started the second week of volunteering on Tuesday. In a search for things to do that'll get you out of the house that don't include the word Slurpee, I started to volunteer to help put together this: www.descours.us. Its a pretty cool architectural design-y festival that goes on for a week in December. So if you're looking for something to do in early December, or just happen to have money you want to donate to make everyone's favorite blogger look better, then please, don't hesitate. The volunteering is fun, hanging out with architectural types, getting out of the house and all that but I'd sooner be paid for my time than not, all things considered.
Wednesday
Finished reading the book 'Lucky Jim' by Kingsley Amis. One of the funniest books I've read in a while. I know you're all wondering, But E, dont you watch TV all day? Isnt that one of the many pleasures of being out of the workforce, midday tv? Great question everyone, the reality is, we don't have a TV in the apartment and I've spent my time reading a number of good books. That, along with illegally downloading the past 3 seasons of Entourage, has helped me better understand the value of the written word. Met with some local friends (yeah, that's right, we, V and myself, have some local friends. Whatever, its no big deal, I mean, I don't even really like them all that much, you guys know that) and went out to an event at NOMA. The museum is in an attractive setting, surrounded by City Park, and you know, if anyone ever makes it down here, it'd be worth checking out. I've been to a couple of these type of events in DC, the difference being, the one here had free Mojitos.
Thursday
I went back to volunteering, we have somehow settled on a Tuesday and Thursday schedule for yours truly. The weird thing about today was that at some point I was alone in the office, and next thing you know I was answering phone calls, taking messages, drinking bad coffee, etc. One thing led to another and I was back at my old job. I damn near hyperventilated. Luckily, there was some 11 month old Halloween candy in the back to calm my nerves, but lets just say I'll be lucky to find a pack of Nerds the next time I have to take a message for someone.
Friday
Through a friend-of-a-friend, I had a meeting with a cool architect in town to discuss "possibilities." He went to UVA (go HOOS, yeah, f-those guys from William & Mary right? and we're done). Needless to say, the meeting ended without a job offer but who knows, sometimes you just have to let it marinate. Friday night was all right, hung out with some friends, drank some wine, talked philosophy. Not really but needless to say working between a student's and an unemployed bum's budget is not conducive to big nights out.
Saturday - Sunday
Not much happened, dinner on Sunday with some friends, E completely screwing up his fantasy football draft (3rd year in a row!) and not much else. Weathers been ok.
Well there you have it, a look back at the week that was. Check back to see only how much more awesome E's week next week will be!! (Does he take that job at wholefoods? When does he officially need to shave? Shower? What Shower?)
